Dr. Julius Garvey serves as an Advisor to the CASONY board. A highly accomplished thoracic surgeon, Dr. Julius Garvey spent his formative years in Kingston, Jamaica. He is the son of The Right Excellent Marcus Mosiah Garvey, the world-renowned Jamaican political activist, publisher, journalist, and orator.
Dr. Garvey’s many contributions in the medical field are numerous and wide. He earned his Bachelor of Science from McGill University in Montreal, Canada and his MDCM degree from McGill University Faculty of Medicine. (McGill is one of the few medical schools using this designation, which stands for Medicinæ Doctorem et Chirurgiæ Magistrum, Latin for “Doctor of Medicine and Master of Surgery”.)
Dr. Garvey interned at The Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal. His first residency in general surgery was at The Mount Sinai Hospital of New York. He completed his residency in Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery at the University of Maryland Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland.
He became an instructor in surgery at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and later joined the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, eventually becoming Associate Professor of Surgery. While teaching at Columbia and Einstein College, Dr. Garvey served as Attending Surgeon in Cardio-thoracic Surgery at the Harlem Hospital Center and Montefiore Hospital, as well as Associate Attending and Head of Thoracic Surgery at the Montefiore Morrisania Affiliate.
He continued to advance, holding positions of increasing responsibility at Queens Hospital Center and Long Island Jewish Medical Center, where he became the Acting Program Director for the Division of Cardio-thoracic Surgery. Additionally, he served as Assistant Professor of Surgery at State University of New York at Stony Brook
Dr. Garvey started his own private practice in 1983. He also served as Chief of Thoracic and Vascular Surgery at Queens Hospital Center and Chief of Vascular Thoracic Surgery at Wyckoff Heights Medical Center.
In addition, his other medical appointments, Dr. Garvey served as an attending surgeon at North Shore University Hospital, Franklin General Hospital, Massapequa General Hospital, Catholic Medical Centers, and Little Neck Community Hospital.
Dr. Garvey has delivered lectures on Agro-ecology in Ghana, South Africa, Namibia, Jamaica and Trinidad. Since 2016, he has lectured annually at the Global Health Catalyst Summit.
In recent years, Dr. Garvey has also begun to lecture on the life and legacy of his father, The Right Excellent Marcus Mosiah Garvey. He continues his work to secure an exoneration for his father, who was falsely charged and convicted of mail fraud by the United States government.
